Algebra for kids!?

When I came across the Mortensen More Than Math program a few years back, I knew I had stumbled upon a gem. It allowed me to address the lack of basic arithmetic skills in high school students while simultaneously teaching them Algebra and other advanced math concepts. The concrete visual approach made learning fun, easy, and boosted confidence. Right away, I realized that there was no going back to the traditional model of teaching math. It didn’t take long for me to discover that this program wasn’t just for older students; even younger students could benefit from it. I transitioned from primarily working with struggling high school students to introducing basic arithmetic skills, Algebra, and other advanced math concepts to elementary students.

There’s no need to wait until the teenage years. In fact, I strongly believe that we’re doing a disservice to students by delaying their introduction to Algebra and other advanced math concepts until high school. They should be exposed to these concepts right from the beginning. We should utilize higher math concepts to teach lower math concepts – using math to teach math.

I must admit that if someone had told me ten years ago that it was possible for 4 to 12-year-olds to effortlessly grasp high school math concepts, I would have responded with a resounding “No way!” and probably laughed at the seemingly absurd notion. However, I have witnessed it firsthand, and I can confidently say that with Mortensen More Than Math, it is indeed possible.
