Children Ages 5 TO 7

Many Mortensen Math, also known as Mortensen More Than Math, ideas, activities, and resources used with Preschool Age Children can also be used with 5 to 7 year olds.

Most 5 to 7 year olds will enjoy and benefit from working in the Smiley Face Books later moving to the Level 1 books while others might start directly in Level 1.

The five math strands are much like the strands found in a rope which when woven together with each other make the rope stronger – students should work jointly in all strands rather than solely in one.

To achieve this students could work in a different strand each day,

1. Monday – Arithmetic
2. Tuesday – Measurement
3. Wednesday – Problem Solving
4. Thursday – Algebra
5. Friday – Calculus

or work in several strands each day.

Let student interest, ability, and your own common sense guide you.

Young children should not work more than three books ahead in any one strand than another.

Play FUN games to teach about addends,

• Skyscraper
• Is it the same?
• Wall
• Build It
• Find one block that is the same

If you do not know how to play these games use the titles and your imagination to create your own FUN games. Your games should be

• simple
• active
• engaging

and

• involve sketches of the blocks – a simple white board and colorful markers are all you need for this

and are only limited by your imagination!

Focus on one addend at a time.

Supplement learning the addends with the Addition Facts Mastery Books for additional (pun intended) FUN written discovery and practice.

Allow children to return to the Smiley Face Books as much as is needed.

Smiley Face Books should be used to introduce dynamic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
